Beyond the Pale: PEM care across Ireland

Emma Fauteux
Dr Emma Fauteux is a French-Canadian paediatrician and paediatric emergency medicine consultant. After obtaining her specialist qualifications in Canada in 2015, she moved to Melbourne for further training in paediatric emergency medicine and paediatric pain management at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Her research has focused on sedation and analgesia in paediatric trauma. Emma is currently paediatric emergency medicine clinical lead at Cork University Hospital.

Carol Blackburn
Dr Carol Blackburn is a consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at CHI Crumlin since 2012. She is a proud graduate of UCC, trained in paediatrics in Ireland with a clinical fellowship in PEM at Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne.
She is a fellow of the faculty of Paediatrics, RCPI and a national specialty director for higher specialist training in paediatrics. She has been the PEM representative to the Emergency Medicine Programme working group since 2015. Current EMP projects include an evaluation of unscheduled care for children nationally. Interests include PEM guidelines, sedation, and is an APLS course director.

Rupa Kapoor
Dr. Rupa Kapoor is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician whose work centers on clinical leadership, curriculum innovation, global health, and physician well-being. She is the creator of a clinical leadership curriculum that has been adopted by over 20 institutions across the U.S. and Canada, empowering physicians to lead with clarity and compassion. In the clinical space, her interests in research focus on innovative ways to provide patient education, improve the beside experience, and global health systems improvement. Outside the clinical space, she finds joy in traveling, reading, and spending meaningful time with her family. She believes deeply in the power of collaboration, lifelong learning, and the balance that sustains us—both professionally and personally.

Rachelle El Helou
Dr. Rachelle El Helou is a dual American Board–certified physician in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. She earned her medical degree from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon and completed residency training in General Pediatrics at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, followed by fellowship training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. She returned to Lebanon in 2022 and joined the Department of Emergency Medicine at AUBMC, where she serves as Program Director of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship, Associate Program Director of the Emergency Medicine residency and Quality Director of the Pediatric Emergency Department. She serves on multiple departmental and institutional committees and has led the successful establishment of the first Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship program in Lebanon. Her professional interests include improving and standardizing the quality of pediatric emergency care in Lebanon and building national capacity in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Deirdre O'Donnell
MB, BCh, BAO, MA, FRCPCH
Dr Deirdre O’Donnell is a Paediatric Emergency Medicine consultant in the Emergency Care Unit of Children’s Health Ireland @Tallaght; Adjunct Assistant Professor, Centre for Global Health, Trinity College Dublin; and lecturer in Humanitarian Medicine (UCHGalway). She has a special interest in Medical Education, International Medicine and Dermatology.
Dr O’Donnell has previously worked in the UK, Australia, Iraq, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Afghanistan. But we always come home in the end!

Callum Swift
Dr Callum Swift is an emergency medicine and intensive care doctor with a special interest in developing sustainable and resilient emergency care systems, both in Ireland and internationally. He is sustainability lead for the Irish Association of Emergency Medicine, secretary of the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine of Ireland sustainability working group, and committee on the European Society of Emergency Medicine Sustainability, Climate Advocacy and Preparedness Network.

Dani Hall (she/her)
Dr Dani Hall is a Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) consultant and Director of Simulation at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) in Dublin. She’s also an Executive Director of Don’t Forget The Bubbles (DFTB), Senior Lecturer in the joint DFTB and Queen Mary University of London PEM MSc; and clinical lead for the three time award-winning Rainbow Badge initiative at CHI, improving access to health for LGBTQ+ young people.

David Irwin
Dave Irwin is an Advanced Paramedic with the National Ambulance Service in Dublin and is currently the National Paramedicine Lead for Resuscitation & Cardiology.
Dave has had a special interest in Cardiology, Resuscitation and Trauma and enjoys combining these passions wherever possible in education and high fidelity simulations.
Having worked in partnership with the Air Corps and NAS Helicopter Emergency Medical Service as part of the air ambulance “Aircorps112” during the COVID19 Pandemic, Dave developed a new interest in Crew Resource Management and Human Factors and how these lessons apply to the world of healthcare. He is delighted to share his perspective with everyone at this year’s IPEM Conference!

Victoria Meighan
Dr Victoria Meighan is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Tallaght University Hospital (TUH), TUH National Doctors Training Programme Lead, TUH/Trinity College Dublin Simulation lead, TCD senior lecturer and Director of point of care ultrasound for the Irish Committee for Emergency Medicine Training.

Emma-May Curran
Dr Emma-May Curran is an SpR in Emergency Medicine in Dublin. She has interests in Simulation Based Medical Education and Trauma and had completed a diploma in simulation education and is currently completing a Masters in Trauma Medicine.

Keynote Speaker

Prof Elizabeth Molyneux
OBE
Prof Elizabeth Molyneux is emeritus professor of paediatrics at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in Blantyre, Malawi. She lived and worked in Malawi for over 33 years. She is a co-founder of APLS (Advanced Paediatric Life Support) course and ETAT (Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment) for WHO. In Blantyre she developed the emergency unit, started palliative care for children, the KMC unit and oncology services. More recently she is one of the NEST360 team trying to reduce preventable neonatal mortality in 5 African countries. Her research interests are wide and include neonatal care, infectious diseases, ‘tropical’ oncology, emergency care, health care delivery and health care systems. She has published over 300 papers in peer reviewed journals and has received several honours including an OBE, FRCPCH hons and DSc h.c.
She firmly believes that quality care depends on a foundation of doing simple, basic things well.

Conor is the President of the Irish Association for Emergency Medicine; Professor of Emergency Medicine, University College Cork; and Clinical Director, Emergency and Acute Care working at Cork University Hospital (CUH).
He also holds the following roles:
· Clinical Lead for the South Trauma Network
· Clinical Lead for National Office of Clinical Audit’s (NOCA) Major Trauma Audit in Ireland
· Examiner for the Royal College of Emergency Medicine
· Associate Adjunct Professor at the School of Primary Care, Monash University, Australia

Angharad Griffiths

Dr Angharad Griffiths has been a Consultant with CHI in Crumlin since 2022.
She is delighted to be part of the IPEM Committee, believing that it is fundamental that children across Ireland have access to equitable and evidence-based care regardless of location or background and hopes this conference contributes towards that goal. Her interests lie in knowledge translation and NCHD training, though she’s pretty passionate about all things PEM!
Graduating from Cardiff University in 2011 and gaining CSCST in General Paediatrics through Higher Specialist Training in Ireland in 2021, Angharad holds a MSc in PEM [University of Edinburgh] and completed a wonderful PEM Fellowship at Starship Hospital, Auckland.
Outside work, Angharad enjoys sports, fresh air and the occasional dabble in DIY.

Turlough Bolger
Dr Turlough Bolger graduated from UCD in 1997. He undertook Paediatric training and General Practice training in Ireland. He was appointed as a full time Paediatric Emergency Medicine consultant to Tallaght University Hospital in February 2010. He has been Clinical Director in Tallaght and President of the Irish Paediatric Association 2017-2019

Freya Guinness

Dr Freya Guinness graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2017 and has since spent her time working in Paediatrics in Ireland & London. She is currently a Paediatric SpR who plans to pursue a career in PEM. Freya also has a PgDip in Healthcare Simulation & Patient Safety from NUIG.
In 2016/2017 she was Manager of StreetDoctors Ireland, a charity which provides life-saving first aid to young people most at risk of youth violence. Her special interests include trauma & medical education.

Alan Watts

Dr Alan Watts is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at University Hospital Limerick and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Limerick School of Medicine. Originally from New York, he spent part of his childhood in Montpellier in France and lived in Boston before moving to Ireland in 1999. He completed his Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine in 2016 having worked in departments around the country. His academic and clinical interests include resuscitation, critical care, chest pain, simulation and pre-hospital Emergency Medicine.
